(Vapor Canister Purge Valve)

Let’s talk about the (Vapor Canister Purge Valve) and some of the most common problems on Fords, Mazda, Hyundai, (Audi, Volkswagen) some GM and European vehicles.

 A stuck-open purge valve can cause difficulty starting right after refueling: the engine may run rough and stumble. Check Engine light may or may not be on with multiple cylinders misfiring mostly at idling. The purge valve is part of the EVAP system. (short for Evaporative Emission Control System) and consist of the Gas Cap, Purge Valve, Vent Valve, Charcoal Canister, Fuel tank pressure sensor, Vapor lines and the ECM, (Engine control module).

Purpose of the Purge Valve:

1.           Purpose: The primary purpose of the EVAP system is to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Fuel vapors contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to air pollution and smog formation.

2. Components:
   • Charcoal Canister: The system includes a charcoal canister, which acts as a storage unit for fuel vapors. When the engine is off, the canister absorbs and holds the vapors.
   • Purge Valve: The purge valve controls the flow of fuel vapors between the canister and the engine. It opens during specific driving conditions (such as acceleration) to allow the vapors to be drawn into the engine intake manifold.
   • Vent Valve: The vent valve allows fresh air to enter the canister, preventing a vacuum buildup. It also closes during refueling to prevent fuel vapors from escaping.
   • Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor: This sensor monitors the pressure inside the fuel tank and provides feedback to the engine control module (ECM).
3. Operation:
   • When the engine is running, the ECM periodically opens the purge valve. This allows the engine to draw in the stored fuel vapors from the canister and burn them during combustion.
   • The system runs self-diagnostic tests to check for leaks. If it detects a leak (e.g., a loose gas cap or damaged hoses), it triggers the check engine light.
4. Testing and Replacement:
   • To test the purge valve, follow the procedure outlined in your vehicle’s service manual.
   • Typically, the purge valve should be normally closed (closed with no voltage) and open when voltage is applied.
   • The following is some fault codes associated with the Evap system.
5. P0442 - Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) Small Leak Detected
   • A P0442 fault code means that the control module has determined that there is a small leak in the EVAP system. A diagnostic starting point would be to check the gas cap to make sure it is sealed properly or to check the fuel vapor lines for a small leak.

6.    P0455 - Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) Large Leak Detected

o    A P0455 fault code means that the control module has determined that there is a large leak in the EVAP system. A diagnostic starting point would be to check the purge valve and vent valve for proper operation and that there is not a massive leak in a fuel vapor line.

7.    P0446 - Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) Vent System Performance

o    A P0446 fault code can be triggered by a vent valve not opening or closing correctly.
